The Q-Tip Toddler

As parents and grandparents, we often forget that kids pay more attention to what we DO than to what we SAY.

AND they imitate us. My 3-year-old granddaughter, Avery, was spending the night with me last week and when it was bedtime, we both brushed our teeth, and then I washed my face as she reached into a drawer under the counter that held a bag of Q-Tips. Avery reached into the bag and grabbed one.

I sprung into action, practically leaping across the sink in a single bound, because I didn’t want her plunging the Q-Tip into her ear. Avery, however, was gently jabbing the Q-Tip into her eye! My drama queen persona leaped out of me.

“WHAT ARE YOU DOING?”

I don’t know if anybody has ever actually gone blind after using Q-Tips on an eye, but I wasn’t about to take any chances.

Avery registered shock at my reaction, but continued jabbing the Q-Tip on her eyes.

As with everything that occurs in situations like this one, I had an “Aha” moment when I remembered that her mother removes her eye makeup using – you guessed it – Q-Tips. If imitation is a form of flattery, Avery’s mama should be proud. Heat attack abated, I found a good reason to write another blog.

  1. Oof! This made me cringe. Little kids are just bound and determined to destroy themselves, aren't they? Good thing you were around to disarm the little one--Q-tips are scary enough in the hands of adults! ;)
