Nolan and the Gasp – Sometimes Good Ideas Can Be Scary

Today Nolan asked me for a snack and headed off to the pantry to locate one.

While he was opening the door to the pantry and after he turned on the light, I noticed bananas on the counter and a light bulb went off in my brain – we could make smoothies instead!

As Nolan opened the pantry door, I dramatically gasped to alert him to the fact that I had just come up with a great idea.

Instead of being happily surprised by my idea, three-year-old Nolan had quite a different reaction to my gasp. He immediately slammed the door, ran to the open space under the counter where I was standing, and hid beneath it.

Afraid of dark spaces, Nolan thought I gasped because something was hiding behind the pantry door. His reaction reminded me of my reactions every time his mother, aunts, and uncle nearly forced me off the road with their gasps while I was driving.

The only danger today was the possibility that Nolan would crack his head on the counter as he dived beneath it.

My Stubborn Grandson

If I give you the plum, will you eat the whole plum and not ask for anything else until you eat the whole plum?

Yes.

Promise?

Yes.

Ten minutes later:

My tummy hurts. I need a Pop Tart.

You said you were going to eat the whole plum.

But my tummy hurts. I need a Pop Tart.

If your tummy hurts, you'll have to take a nap, because if your tummy hurts, you're sick.

No, I'm not. I just want a Pop Tart.

OK. Finish your plum and I'll give you the Pop Tart.

But my tummy hurts.

Five minutes later:

Zac asleep on the hard wood bench.
Notice the uneaten plum on the table by his booster seat.

Audrey and Nolan Name their New Baby

Audrey and Nolan playing dress-up.
Ever since Nolan could talk, whenever he pretends, he always plays with some invisible character known as Jack. The only Jack I know is Jack-Jack from the movie, The Incredibles.

Well, now Nolan and Audrey's mom is pregnant and Brittney and Scott have been discussing names for the new baby. They look through baby books and rule out the names they don't want, but haven't yet come up with a name they want for their new baby (if he's a boy).

If the baby is a girl, Brittney knows what she wants to name her (though I can't tell you, because she's afraid somebody will steal it).

The boy name she had previously chosen was taken by my granddaughter who named her baby, Colin. Scott didn't particularly like that name though. And, since Brittney doesn't want duplicate names in the family, she has to come up with something nobody else is using. As a result, Brittney and Scott have not yet come up with a boy name that either of them likes.

But Audrey and Nolan have it figured out. They want the baby's name, if he is a boy, to be Jack. They have even picked out his middle name, Frost.

Another Simple Misunderstanding

Rarely do I get to spend time with my oldest daughter who lives 3 hours away from me, so I was happy to be able to spend some time with her and her family, which includes two of her children, Wesley, nearly 14, and Jeremy, 9 and a half.

Jeremy sometimes reminds me of myself. When my childhood home caught fire and my entire classroom jumped up to see all the fire trucks zooming by our classroom window, my teacher commanded all of us to sit down, because none of those trucks were for any of us. I couldn't wait to get back to school to tell the teacher how wrong she was.

Though the fire occurred on a Wednesday, because of the dangerously low temperature, we wouldn't return to school until the following Monday. First thing Monday morning, I ran up to her to tell her she was wrong. The fire trucks WERE going to my house! So there!

On my weekend visit with my daughter and her family, Jeremy couldn't wait to tell me about the mistake his mother had made the time they all went out for dinner. Wesley had made a mental note of the waitress tag that said, "Jackie."

After they all enjoyed a meal together and when it was time to leave, Keeley talked to Mike about the tip. Wesley and Jeremy heard, "Don't forget Tootie."

Wesley had paid attention to Jackie's name tag. "MOM! Her name is Jackie, not Tootie!"

Keeley is still trying to convince Jeremy, who delights in telling this story again and again, that what she said was NOT, "Don't forget Tootie," but, "Don't forget the gratuity."

Life Insurance Protection and Cancer

Even the words, "life insurance," sound like a misnomer. I mean, how can anybody be assured of living when so many illnesses, like cancer, lung disease, and AIDS are killing people by the thousands every day?

A car crash can take your life in seconds. A house fire can demolish clothing, people, and animals. Hurricanes and tornadoes can wipe out the family home, leaving everything in shambles.

When I was younger I never thought of getting life insurance. If my job offered it as a perk, I didn't balk about paying the premiums, but I never actively sought out life insurance.

And then I got cancer and suddenly insurance in all forms seemed important. Funny thing about cancer and health insurance though. If you find a company – like Aflac – that pays out money to keep you afloat while you have cancer, you had better catch them BEFORE you get cancer. Otherwise you'll be too late in getting insurance that could have helped you financially.

And if your death results from cancer or any other diseases, have you left your family with enough resources to take care of themselves?

Life insurance is meant to be proactive and to provide protection for your loved ones. If you die and your family loses the home that kept them warm and comfortable, what will happen to them? Where will they go?

The "funny" thing about sudden illness, and cancer in particular, is that just because nobody in your family has ever had it doesn't preclude you from developing breast cancer or other diseases.

What if Mom was an only child? If she had had sisters, one of them might have developed breast cancer. Unbeknown to you and your mother, your great great grandmother died from the disease, but nobody knew how she died.

It could happen. When my mother found out I had breast cancer, she couldn't understand how I got it when nobody in her – or my father's – family had ever had it. And then, when she told family members about my cancer, she discovered two cousins and an aunt who had had breast cancer.

Unless you are getting state aid for your medical conditions, I would highly recommend getting insurance from a REPUTABLE company, not one of those companies you pay into for years and years, and then, when you get the disease you've been hoping you would never get, they decide you're no longer insurable.

Research. Find reputable companies who pay what they promise they will pay.

Start your search by getting cheap life insurance quotes from TLI. They offer cheap life insurance quotes, family insurance coverage, whole term life, and life insurance plans.

Research proves that one in six women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. Look around you. If every female member of your family has been fortunate in NOT getting breast cancer, thank God.

If any possibility exists that you or a member of your family could develop breast cancer, or any of a number of diseases in your lifetimes, contact TLI for an insurance quote. Not every woman who develops breast cancer will die from the disease, but do you want to risk losing the family home if you are someone who dies without leaving your family protected?

Dusty Springfield, Linda McCartney, Lyn Redgrave, and a number of other women who died from breast cancer were fortunate in that their surviving family members were well cared for. Are yours? If not, please click TLI Family Insurance for a free quote.

The Home With No Stains

I don't know anybody with kids who doesn't have stains of some sort – actually I do know a couple of people. I have to credit my mother and my sister as being the only people I know who managed to keep their homes spotless while raising children. Always. Well, except for the year we had fire and flood damage (fire because of an actual fire and flood because of all the water they used to put out the fire).

But other than that one time, my mother kept the home pristine. How was that possible to maintain a sparkly clean home while raising young children, you ask?

My mother installed a shower by the back door where my sisters and I had to disrobe – at the door – and then jump in the shower before we could enter the house.

OK, I'm kidding, but seriously, our home was immaculate. We had to take off all outwear at the back door. We, and everybody else who entered the home, had to remove our shoes. We were not allowed to eat anywhere but in the kitchen at the kitchen table where vinyl flooring sat dry beneath mother-monitor-eyes that examined each bite and drink we swallowed, ready to leap into action should one tiny crumb or one drop of milk splatter anywhere but on the table.

Today parents are more relaxed about allowing their kids to eat everywhere in the house. And everywhere includes the couch, the carpet, and even the bed.

Those L-shaped couches are big and beautiful, but if you allow kids to eat food on them you will soon learn about how suede furniture cleaning warranties don't cover more than just a couple of stains. A family I know learned that lesson the hard way. They also learned that not every cleaner recommended for suede furniture actually works.

What they probably should have done was use fabric protection prior to using the furniture. But who looks at brand new furniture and sees the potential damage that a tiny spot of milk can leave?

Furniture isn't the only thing that suffers damage from food and drink. Maybe I should have protected my carpet too. In three short years, the damage to my carpet has been significant. I really need some professional carpet cleaning services or maybe just some good rug cleaning supplies.

In the meantime, it's nearly Spring and time to take care of the outside of my home. I need a good power washing company, like the ones my friends in Austin and Dallas use, The Steam Team.
